reads #12: december 2012

David Boring (Daniel Clowes, 2000)

I got this graphic novel for Christmas from my boyfriend which allowed me to at last tick it off my wishlist. It's been there for ages, ever since I read Ghost World from the same author, which I am a massive fan of. Actually it's one of my favourite book of all time. Yes, that dramatic. It would only be logical that I check other works from the same author. I don't know why it took me so long because David Boring was amazing!
The plot is a bit busy, but don't let it put you off: there's a bit of a doomsday background, a Lynchean dilemma between a blonde and a brunette, gunshots, incestuous relationships, a quest for a lost father, a huis-clos on an island, and loads of socially awkward outcast type characters Clowes-style!
Behind the complexity of the plot, I think what you will find is that the story is about the pursuit of happiness or love. No matter the obstacles (a nuclear war, a horrible mother, schizophrenic girlfriends), David Boring is set on his search for the perfect companion, even if it means losing everything for a few precious moments spent with her...
I'm determined now not to let so much time pass before my next Daniel Clowes graphic novel. Now, which one should I get next?

I've never actually read a graphic novel, but this sounds really fascinating. I must check it out!

Also, thank you for your lovely comment on my blog. I am feeling much better right now. I think it is necessary to get sad once a month, but then I just write and write until it goes away.

@liz: if you can, start with 'ghost world' by the same author, it got me into graphic novels in general.
I'm glad you're feeling better, writing is a great mean of therapy x

@rita: let me know what you think of it x
