2012 watchlist

With the new year starting, there's a lot to get excited about. Here's what I'm looking forward to watching on the big and little screen:

We'll take Manhattan

No later than tonight, this BBC drama will recount the story on how photographer David Bailey (Aneurin Barnard) meets Jean Shrimpton (Karen Gillan) at an impromptu NYC photo-shoot that would change the face of fashion in the sixties. The public will fall hard for the graceful Shrimp and they won't be alone: David also has his eyes set on the belle...
We'll take Manhattan will air tonight at 9pm on BBC4 - watch trailer

Moonrise Kingdom

A new Wes Anderson is always an event in itself, isn't it? Who could boast such a perfect filmography nowadays? Moonrise Kingdom is also set in the sixties and is also about a love story (there's a theme to this post apparently...). The background is a youth camp in New England where two kids fall in love and decide to elope.
The cast is a delight: Bill Murray, Jason Scwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand among many others.
Moonrise Kingdom will be released in the cinemas in May 2012 - watch trailer

From Up On Poppy Hill

Reading this blog, there's no denying I am a huge Ghibli fan and every new release from the studio brings the equal amount of squealing and jumping around the place (my yearly exercise...). After the last film The Borrower Arrietty which was a visual feast but was lacking a bit in the substance department, I actually have high hopes for the upcoming From Up On Poppy Hill. It is directed by Miyazaki's son and the screenplay was written by no other than the Master himself.
In 1963 (again, I know...), Japan is getting ready for the Olympics. Everything must be brand new, hundreds of historical buildings will be sacrificed in the name of renovation. In the port of Yokohama, two young kids decide to save their school's clubhouse from destruction.
From Up On Poppy Hill was released in France this month so I hope by next summer, it will be in the UK/Irish cinemas - watch trailer (isn't the soundtrack superb?)

Mad Men Season 5

I have to say I got kind of relieved when I saw the poster for the new season of Mad Men (above). It's not the image of a man who enjoys married life, is it? Would that mean out with Megan? It can't happen quick enough if you ask me. Watching season 4 a second time helped me understand why he chose Megan over Faye but it definitely didn't make me like her more...
The first episode of season 5 will air on March 25 and will be 2 hour long! It will be called 'A Little Kiss' and Matt Weiner [spoiler alert] revealed that the said kiss might involve Don Draper and an unknown partner (take that Megan!). He also added: "Who says Megan's even going to be part of Don's life? He may be back with Betty. One of my favorite scenes was when Betty offered herself to him again. And let's face it -- those two look really good together" (source).
This sounds beyond exciting!
